Prayer That Calls Us Forward

When we read Paul’s words in Philippians 1:9–11, it’s easy to hear them as a personal prayer—something spoken over my heart, my growth, my discernment. But Paul wasn’t writing to an individual. He was praying over an entire community, a people learning to follow Christ together.

And this is my prayer: that your love may abound more and more in knowledge and depth of insight, so that you may be able to discern what is best and may be pure and blameless for the day of Christ, filled with the fruit of righteousness that comes through Jesus Christ—to the glory and praise of God. And this is my prayer: that your love may abound more and more in knowledge and depth of insight, so that you may be able to discern what is best and may be pure and blameless for the day of Christ, filled with the fruit of righteousness that comes through Jesus Christ—to the glory and praise of God. Philippians 1:9-11 (NIV)

What if we received this prayer the same way not as a private whisper, but as a shared calling?

Paul prays that “your love may abound more and more” not just in one person, but in the whole body. A community shaped by abounding love becomes a witness in a fractured world. A community growing in knowledge and depth of insight becomes a people who discern what is best not only for themselves, but for one another. A community seeking to be pure and blameless becomes a light that steadies others toward Christ.

This is a prayer that forms a people.
A prayer that shapes a church.
A prayer that sends us into the world bearing the fruit of righteousness that comes through Jesus Christ.

So today, let this scripture stretch you beyond the boundaries of your own spiritual life. Let it widen your imagination for what God desires to do among us, not just within you.

And then take a step.
Choose one action that helps this prayer take root in your community:

  • Offer encouragement to someone who is struggling.
  • Seek reconciliation where division has taken hold.
  • Pray intentionally for your church to grow in love and discernment.
  • Look for ways to bear Christ’s fruit in your neighborhood, workplace, or family.

Paul’s prayer becomes powerful when it becomes shared. May we live it together—for the glory and praise of God.
