Hope in the Darkness

Reflections for contemplative living

We live in a world where we find uncertainty around most every corner we turn.  Even with faith and a firm foundation, it can be a dark and depressing place.  For those who struggle with mental illness, a thread of hope can be the difference between life and death.

Today we celebrate St. Dymphna who has been associated with accounts of miraculous cures of mental illness and who is often a comfort for those inflicted with emotional and mental distress. She is the patron saint of anxiety, mental illness, emotional distress, depression, and families, as well as psychologists.

We look to her for her courage.  Her strength was from God and enabled her to resist evil.

May her example in little things gain for us fortitude to bear the misfortunes we meet with strength to overcome our weakness.

Lord, give comfort to those of us who are anxious, and may Your hope be the thread that binds together Your creation.
