The Political Rule of the Heart

“Dilexit Nos” proposes a beautiful idea: that all of our actions should be placed under the “political rule of the heart.” This isn’t just a metaphor; it suggests that our heart, which “senses and savors truths,” should be the ultimate authority in our lives.

This is a powerful reminder that our minds and wills are meant to serve our hearts, guiding us toward the good that God desires. This is how we live a life worthy of our belovedness—by allowing our hearts to lead the way. As the encyclical states, the heart “is meant to exercise a political rule over our actions, so that the will and the mind may be docile servants of the heart.”

In Psalm 32:8, God promises to guide us: “I will instruct you and teach you in the way you should go; I will counsel you with my loving eye on you.”

What is one area of your life where your mind and will have been leading, and you need to invite your heart to take the “political rule”?

Today, before you speak or act, take a moment to ask, “Is this coming from my heart?”
