There are seasons when life feels suspended between what was and what will be. Prayers have been offered, tears have been shed, and yet the answer seems delayed. We stand in the space between longing and fulfillment, wondering if anything is happening at all.
Yet the spiritual life teaches us that God often does His deepest work in hidden places.
A seed does not break through the soil the day it is planted. Roots grow in darkness long before branches reach toward the light. So it is with the soul. God is often accomplishing something far greater than what we can presently see.
The trials we would gladly avoid frequently become the means by which faith matures. Courage is not the absence of uncertainty; it is the willingness to remain faithful within it. Every act of trust, every surrendered fear, every quiet yes to God enlarges the heart’s capacity to receive Him.
In time we discover that the purpose of many seasons was not to change our circumstances as much as to change us.
The waiting taught us patience.
The uncertainty taught us trust.
The suffering taught us compassion.
The silence taught us to listen.
Perhaps this is why we must resist the temptation to rush through difficult seasons. God is present not only in the destination, but also in the becoming.
This present moment is filled with God.
Not the future moment when everything makes sense. Not the past moment when life felt easier. This moment.
This in-between is filled with God.
The unfinished chapter. The unanswered prayer. The road whose end we cannot yet see.
This silent waiting is filled with God.
Beneath the surface He is working, gently and patiently, forming Christ within us.
The soul grows by learning to recognize His presence where it least expects to find Him—not only in joy, but in longing; not only in clarity, but in uncertainty; not only in fulfillment, but in waiting.
One day we may look back and realize that what felt like God’s absence was actually His nearness. What felt like delay was His careful craftsmanship. What felt like standing still was the slow and sacred work of transformation.
So be patient with yourself. Be patient with your circumstances. Be patient with God.
The One who guides the stars and seasons is also guiding your life.
And He is never in a hurry.
The present moment is filled with Him.
The in-between is filled with Him.
The silent waiting is filled with Him.
So trust in the slow work of God. He is closer than you think.
