The Gift Within the Gift

We often think of the Christian life as following Jesus, but Jesus reveals something even more astonishing: He invites us into His own relationship with the Father.

The greatest gift Christ gives us is not merely teaching, forgiveness, or even consolation. It is participation in the life He shares with the Father from all eternity. Through Him, we are welcomed into divine intimacy. We are invited to become friends of the Source of all that is.

Yet this friendship cannot be grasped by effort or achievement. It is received by becoming little. The child does not strive to sustain his own existence; he receives everything as a gift. So too the soul slowly awakens to the truth that every breath, every grace, every moment comes from the Father’s hand.

Holiness begins when we stop trying to manufacture meaning for ourselves and instead learn to receive our lives from God.

The spiritual journey is ultimately a journey into dependence—not the dependence of weakness, but the dependence of love. For the closer we draw to God, the more we discover that our deepest truth is not our self-sufficiency, but our belovedness. We find the gift within the gift.
