Amos gives us a breathtaking image of God:
“I have built heaven, my upper chamber… I summon the waters of the sea and pour them out upon the surface of the earth.” This is the God whose very name carries creative force, whose voice commands oceans, whose presence arches over the earth like a vast and living vault.
And yet Scripture pairs this grandeur with another truth, one that humbles us even more:
He is the One “who dwells in unapproachable light, whom no human being has seen or can see.” There is a radiance to God that is simply beyond us. Not because He hides Himself, but because His holiness is too immense for our eyes, too alive for our limits.
This is not meant to frighten us. It is meant to awaken reverence.
We live our days surrounded by things we can touch, measure, predict, and control. But God is not one of them. God is not manageable. God is not containable. God is not a concept we master. He is the living God, Creator of seas, Builder of heavens, Dweller in light.
And yet this same God bends toward us in love.
The One who pours out the waters of the sea also pours out mercy.
The One who dwells in unapproachable light also approaches us in gentleness.
The One no human can see chooses to make Himself known in ways our hearts can bear.
This is the mystery we stand before: God is infinitely beyond us, and intimately for us.
