Throughout the Gospels, people are struck by the authority of Jesus as He confronts and quiets unclean spirits, forces that distort, wound, and oppress. His power is never harsh or theatrical; it is steady, holy, and rooted in the very heart of God. And this same authority continues to move within our lives today, revealing that nothing dark or destructive within us is beyond His reach.
We have received the Spirit “so that we may understand the things freely given us by God.” Our amazement comes as we recognize that the “unclean spirits” within us—fear, temptation, shame, old patterns—can be rebuked and quieted by Jesus. His authority is not distant; it is deeply personal.
We have only to confide ourselves and all our sins, temptations, and fears entirely to Christ’s authority. He meets us not with condemnation but with restoration. He steadies what is trembling. He strengthens what is weary. He “lifts up all who are falling and raises up all who are bowed down.”
Wherever you feel bowed down today, let His authority meet you there, firm, gentle, and victorious. Give all of your heart.
