The Freedom of Dependence

The Feast of All Saints is a celebration of what God can accomplish in a human life that is fully surrendered to Him.

The world teaches us to value independence. The saints teach us the freedom of dependence.

Jesus lived every moment in loving communion with His Father. By inviting us to come to Him, He invites us into that same relationship. This is the hidden treasure of the Christian life—not merely believing in God, but living as beloved sons and daughters of the Father.

When we look at the saints, we see remarkable diversity. Some were scholars, some laborers, some contemplatives, some missionaries. Yet beneath their differences was a common secret: they knew they belonged entirely to God.

The saints were not great because they relied on themselves. They were great because they relied on God.

Their holiness flowed from a childlike trust. They allowed themselves to be led, corrected, sustained, and loved. They embraced the truth that they were creatures utterly dependent on their Creator.

Mary stands at the center of this great communion. Her entire life was a response of receptivity: “Let it be done unto me according to your word.” She received everything from God and returned everything to Him.

On this Feast of All Saints, we are reminded that sanctity is not reserved for the few. The path of holiness remains the same for all of us: to become like little children before the Father, trusting Him with our lives and receiving each day as a gift.

The saints now rejoice because they finally see what they trusted by faith, that God is everything.

And their lives gently invite us to the same freedom: to stop relying on ourselves and to rest more completely in the Father who never ceases to create, sustain, and love His children.
