Learning to Be Created

On the eve of All Saints, or All Hallows Eve, the world is often fascinated by shadows, masks, and mysteries. Yet All Hallows’ Eve can remind us of a deeper reality: we are not self-made beings trying to carve out our own meaning in an indifferent universe. We are creatures, lovingly created and sustained by God.

Much of life is spent trying to become someone. We strive, plan, achieve, and define ourselves. Yet the Gospel gently proposes another way.

At the deepest level, we are not the authors of our own existence. We are being continually held in being by the One who loved us into life.

Christian life means learning to live from this reality. Every moment is an invitation to allow God to create us anew. The saints understood that holiness was not a matter of self-invention but of surrender. They allowed God to shape them according to His design.

Perhaps that is what this vigil of All Saints invites us to ponder. Beneath every costume and disguise lies the most important truth about us: we belong to God.

As darkness falls and another liturgical year moves toward the celebration of the saints, we are invited to become like little children, relinquishing the illusion that we are masters of our own lives. The Father asks only that we trust Him enough to receive life as a gift.

Every breath is given. Every moment is sustained. Every grace is received.

The soul flourishes when it ceases striving to create itself and instead consents to being continually created by Love.
