The Mystery With Us

There is a line in Psalm 104 that shimmers with wonder: “Clouds hide him; he walks upon the vault of the heavens.”

It evokes the God who is dazzling in mystery, so radiant that our eyes cannot bear the brightness, so immense that clouds become His veil.

We often imagine this God as far away, dwelling somewhere beyond the highest heavens, unreachable in His majesty. And yet Scripture insists on a second truth just as profound: the God who walks the heavens also walks here, in the quiet nearness of our lives.

Mystery does not mean distance. Brightness does not mean absence. The One who is hidden in clouds is also hidden in the ordinary, in breath, in kindness, in silence, in the small movements of grace that shape our days.

This is the paradox of faith: God is beyond us, and God is beside us. God is clothed in mystery, and God is present in intimacy. God is more than we can imagine, and God is nearer than we dare believe.

So the psalmist ends with a simple, wholehearted cry: “Bless the Lord, my soul!”

It is the only fitting response to a God who is both infinite and immediate, a God who walks the heavens and walks with us.
