There were multiple experiences at Mass this week that stayed with me long after I walked out the doors, quiet insights that settled into my heart that kept unfolding. The Gospel spoke of the merchant searching for fine pearls, and suddenly the image shifted for me. I wasn’t just imagining the merchant. I was imagining the pearl.
A pearl begins as a grain of sand—small, ordinary, even irritating. And yet, through time, pressure, and countless layers, it becomes something luminous. Something treasured. Something whole.
As I sat there, it struck me deeply: I am the pearl. And God has been layering love over my life from the very beginning.
Not the kind of predestination that removes freedom, but the kind Paul speaks of—God’s desire that we be conformed to the image of Christ. God’s dream for us. God’s intention woven into our being. Like the pearl, we are shaped slowly, gently, through seasons of challenge and seasons of grace.
The layers of love become the story of who we are:
- The love that steadies us in hardship
- The love that softens us through forgiveness
- The love that strengthens us through truth
- The love that surprises us with joy
- The love that keeps forming us even when we feel unfinished
Over time, these layers create something beautiful that reflects Christ’s own radiance.
This week, I carried that image with me: God as the patient artisan, never rushing, never discarding, always adding another layer of mercy, another layer of compassion, another layer of hope. The transformation is slow, but it is sure. And it is happening in all of us.
We are pearls in the making, becoming what God has always seen. We are being shaped into the image of Christ, one loving layer at a time.
