The Heart vs. Rationalism

For centuries, philosophers have often prioritized reason and will, frequently overlooking the heart. “Dilexit Nos” argues that this has led to a “stunting of the idea of a personal center.” I’ve felt this pressure in my own life—the constant push to be logical and rational, often at the expense of my emotions and intuition.

But the encyclical reminds me that love is the reality that unifies everything. As it states, “The mind alone cannot communicate the messages of the heart.” My belovedness is one of those messages—a truth I must feel, not just think. This isn’t about dismissing reason, but about integrating it with the wisdom of the heart.

As Proverbs 3:5 encourages us, “Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding.”

When have you relied too much on your mind and not enough on the guidance of your heart?

Today, before making a decision, take a moment to ask your heart what it is saying, in addition to what your mind is telling you.
