In our fast-paced world, it’s easy to think of life as what we see, touch, and plan for today. But the Gospel offers a deeper reality—eternal life is a gift that begins now and lasts forever.
Jesus defines eternal life in a striking way:
“Now this is eternal life: that they may know you, the only true God, and Jesus Christ whom you have sent.” (John 17:3)
Eternal life isn’t just about what happens after death. It’s about a relationship—knowing and being united with God through Jesus. It’s the very life of God shared with us, beginning now through faith, grace, and the sacraments, and reaching its fullness in Heaven.
This life is a gift, not something we can earn. Through Baptism, we are born into it. In the Eucharist, we’re nourished by it. In living a life of love, prayer, and trust in Christ, we grow deeper into it.
Yes, eternal life includes the hope of the resurrection—our bodies renewed and reunited with our souls in a new creation. But even today, we are called to live with a foretaste of Heaven: in love, truth, peace, and communion with God and one another.
Eternal life begins not someday, but now.
How are you living it today?
