Spirit of Compassion

Reflections for contemplative living

If we let it, suffering can transform us into who God created us to be. Taking us out of our comfort zone, usually striking fear in us and calling us to strength we usually have not relied on before.

Watching others suffering can move us to want to help. As a person who sometimes cares too much I need to watch my motivation.

Growing up, I felt powerless when I encountered suffering whether it was sickness, loss, or violence. I learned to try to offer a “quick fix” so that I didn’t have to live with the anxiety another’s pain caused me. I remember feeling frustrated when my love and concern couldn’t make everything better. Sometimes I would leave the situation overwhelmed by the problems I had no way of solving.

As I’ve matured, I’ve learned that these are the times I can affirm that healing is a natural tendency and that others have a God working in their lives. I can offer unconditional love and moral support. If it’s appropriate, I can share my experience, strength, and hope.  It doesn’t help others when I’m  more active than they’re willing to be in attempting to solve their problems, or when I neglect my own life in the process. I’m learning to offer love and understanding to others without trying to fix them

God grant me the spirit of compassion, Your spirit, and help me strive to keep my heart open to the suffering of others.
