On a quiet sabbath morning, Jesus steps into the synagogue and teaches. ( Luke 6:6-11) A man with a withered hand stands nearby, not asking for anything, not drawing attention to himself. Yet Jesus sees him. He also sees the scribes and Pharisees watching, not with hope but with suspicion, waiting for a reason to accuse. Still, Jesus does not let their hostility hold him back. He brings the man forward, right into the center of the room, and asks the question that reveals everything:
Is it lawful to do good or to do harm, to save life or to destroy it?
Kindness, in Jesus’ eyes, is never secondary. It is never something to postpone until the rules are satisfied. It is the rule.
And then comes the moment when He says:
“Stretch out your hand.”
The man must act before he knows what will happen. He must trust before he can see. Grace often works this way, asking us to move, even slightly, toward healing before we feel its warmth.
Is there a withered part of you, some capacity you’ve stopped trusting, that Jesus might be inviting you to stretch out today?
Is there a habit, expectation, or unspoken rule in your life that sometimes gets in the way of doing good?
Let’s ask for the grace of courage and strength to stretch out our hand today.
