The God Who Sees Me

There are moments in life when we feel overlooked, unnoticed, or forgotten. We may be surrounded by people and yet carry silent burdens that no one else can see. In those moments, one of God’s most comforting names speaks directly to the heart: El Roi, “The God Who Sees Me.”

This name first appears in the story of Hagar, a woman who found herself alone, rejected, and uncertain about her future. In the wilderness, God met her in her distress. He saw her pain, heard her cries, and reminded her that she was not abandoned. In response, Hagar called Him El Roi, declaring, “You are the God who sees me.”

What a beautiful truth to hold onto.

God’s sight is unlike human sight. People often see appearances, accomplishments, or failures. God sees deeper. He sees the tears we hide, the prayers we whisper, the fears we carry, and the hopes we dare not speak aloud. There is not a single moment of our lives that escapes His loving attention.

When feelings of insignificance begin to creep in, there is comfort in a simple breath prayer:

Inhale: El Roi, You see me.
Exhale: I am never forgotten.

With every breath, this prayer reminds me that my value is not determined by how visible I am to others. My worth is established by the One who created me, knows me completely, and watches over me with unwavering love.

The world often measures significance by recognition and achievement. Yet God offers a different assurance: we are fully known and fully loved. Even in seasons when doors seem closed, prayers appear unanswered, or loneliness feels overwhelming, El Roi remains near.

Today, if you are feeling unseen, pause for a moment. Take a slow breath. Remember that the God who met Hagar in the wilderness is the same God who meets us in our own. He sees every struggle, every act of faithfulness, and every longing of your heart.

You are not invisible. You are not forgotten. You are seen by El Roi, the God who sees you.
