The Power of Friendliness

The world seems smaller than ever. Through the internet, social media, and smartphones, we are constantly connected with people from different cultures, backgrounds, and beliefs. While this can sometimes create tension, it also presents an extraordinary opportunity for Christians to witness to the Gospel.

In such a connected world, the virtue of friendliness, often called affability, is more important than ever. St. Thomas Aquinas teaches that friendliness is connected to justice because it is something we owe to others. Every person deserves to be treated with dignity, respect, and kindness. Our words and actions should reflect the love of Christ, even when we encounter those who think or live differently than we do.

This is especially true in the work of evangelization. People are far more likely to listen to the message of Jesus when it is delivered with genuine kindness. Harshness may win an argument, but it rarely wins a heart. Christ himself showed a spirit of peace and goodwill, and he instructed his disciples to do the same: “As you enter a house, wish it peace. If the house is worthy, let your peace come upon it; if not, let your peace return to you” (Matthew 10:13).

Friendliness is not weakness or compromise. Rather, it is a powerful expression of Christian charity. In a world often marked by division and hostility, a warm smile, a respectful conversation, or a patient response can become a doorway to deeper relationships and meaningful faith discussions.

As we navigate our increasingly connected world, let us remember that kindness is not merely good manners. It is a Christian duty and an essential tool of evangelization. Through affability and genuine concern for others, we can bring Christ’s peace into every encounter.
