There is a quiet truth we learn only after years of living: the things we chase in this world can never fully be ours. Houses, land, titles, achievements, none of them can belong wholly to more than one person at a time. And because of that, they so often become the source of rivalry, comparison, and restless striving. Earthly goods divide us. They create borders, competition, and the subtle ache of wanting what another has.
But the riches of the spirit work differently. They are spacious, shared and multiply in communion.
Saint Augustine’s insight opens the door to this deeper reality: material goods are limited, but spiritual goods are infinite. The same truth, the same virtue, the same God can belong entirely to each of us without diminishing anyone else’s share. In fact, the more we receive them together, the more abundant they become.
Grace is never scarce.
Love is never rationed.
God’s generosity is never divided.
This is why envy dissolves in the presence of God’s abundance. As Jesus asks in Matthew’s parable, “Are you envious because I am generous?” His generosity is not a threat—it is our reward. It is the pasture of Psalm 100, where we are led not by competition but by belonging: “We are his people, the sheep of his pasture.”
And as Ephesians reminds us, “Grace was given to each of us according to the measure of Christ’s gift.” Not according to our merit. Not according to our achievements. But according to Christ’s own measure, which is limitless.
Our spiritual wages are not earned, they are received. They are shared. They are inexhaustible.
May we ask today for the grace of generosity, a heart wide enough to rejoice in God’s gifts wherever they appear, a spirit free enough to celebrate the abundance given to all, and eyes clear enough to see that what God gives is never taken from us, but multiplied in us.
