There is a quiet, liberating grace in discovering the power of and. It is one of the deepest movements of the Spirit—this widening of the heart that allows us to hold truth and tenderness together, strength and vulnerability together, conviction and compassion together.
I grew up in a world shaped by either/or thinking. A judgmental household. A culture that feeds on comparisons. A spiritual atmosphere where differences were magnified and equality was rarely named. For years, judgment became my “go‑to,” and every time it rose up in me, it made me feel small—less than—like I had somehow failed to measure up.
But healing has a way of softening the edges.
Slowly, gently, the Spirit has been reconciling something inside me—teaching me to see with new eyes, to let mercy interrupt old patterns, to let compassion take the lead. I’m realizing that the challenging people in my life are not obstacles, they are golden opportunities to practice the power of and.
I can feel hurt and choose mercy. I can see someone’s flaws and honor their dignity. I can acknowledge my own wounds and stay open to grace.
This is the inner work of reconciliation—where the Spirit stitches together what judgment once tore apart.
I recently read a reflection by Richard Rohr that stuck with me. He writes of Mother Teresa:
“If she started correcting and pointing out ‘sinners,’ she could no longer be an instrument of love and reconciliation for them.”
She understood the power of and. She knew that taking sides would fracture her ability to love. She knew that labeling people would limit her capacity to serve. She knew that Jesus had asked her to be love—to and for all.
Her life became a living witness to the truth that we do not have to choose between truth and tenderness, between clarity and compassion, between justice and mercy. The Spirit can hold them together within us.
And when we allow that same Spirit to work through our own lives, something shifts. Judgment loosens. Comparison quiets. Love expands.
The power of and becomes a way of seeing, deep within us and among us.
