There is a truth so large beyond our tit‑for‑tat thinking that we almost cannot hold it. We are chosen as God’s beloved. Not because we worthy, ready or because we have earned anything at all. We are chosen because God chooses.
Paul hints at this mystery when he says that God’s call is irrevocable, not dependent on our merit, not fragile, not conditional. But this is hard for our small minds to grasp. We are trained to think in transactions, in deserving, in proving ourselves. Yet God’s love does not operate in that economy.
Chosenness has nothing to do with worthiness.
It has everything to do with God’s freedom and God’s desire.
And here is the paradox: No one is ever ready to be chosen. Readiness comes after chosenness. It comes from experiencing the love, surrendering to it, letting it reshape us from the inside.
The biblical tradition goes to great lengths to show this. God chooses the unworthy, the weak, the sinful, the broken not to shame them, but to reveal that love is always God’s initiative. We are not the heroes of the story. We are the clay, the instruments and the ones through whom God loves, heals, and blesses.
When we love God, it is God loving through us.
When we love others, it is God pouring Himself outward in us. When we surrender, it is God drawing us deeper into union.
Chosenness is not a medal, it is a miracle.
It is the quiet, steady truth that God’s love rests upon us before we lift a finger, before we understand and before we change.
And if we let this truth expand our small minds, something shifts. We stop trying to earn what is already ours. We stop performing for a God who has already chosen us. We stop shrinking from a love that has already claimed us.
We begin to live as the beloved: open, surrendered, receptive, available.
Because God’s choice is not about our readiness. It is about God’s heart. And God’s heart has already said yes.
