Our passions are gifts. They stir our hearts, move our bodies, and give energy to our days. Yet without order, they can scatter us—pulling us in many directions, leaving us restless and unfocused. The Christian tradition reminds us that passions are meant to be guided, not suppressed. They are to be aligned with love, directed toward God’s dream rather than our own impulses.
Discernment is the practice that brings this ordering. It is the patient listening for God’s voice beneath the noise of desire. It is the willingness to ask: Is this passion leading me toward Christ, or away from Him? And here lies the deeper question: What am I saying no to, so that I can say yes to the right thing in my life?
Every “no” becomes a doorway. By refusing distraction, selfishness, or misplaced desire, we open ourselves to the “yes” that matters—the “yes” to God’s will, to love, to compassion. Right order does not mean denying our humanity. It means allowing our humanity to be lifted into God’s purposes. Our joy, our longing, even our anger can become instruments of grace when surrendered to the Spirit.
So today, consider: what “no” is God inviting you to speak, so that your “yes” may be wholehearted and true?
