Pentecost always reminds us that the Holy Spirit does not descend to create spectators — the Spirit creates ambassadors. People who step into the world carrying courage, clarity, and compassion that are not their own. This week, Pope Leo XIV offered a striking echo of that truth as he welcomed new ambassadors to the Holy See and urged them to become instruments of the peace our world aches for.
He reminded them — and really, all of us — that no nation or community can call itself just if it forgets the poor, the vulnerable, or the unseen. Christ’s love always moves outward, toward those at the margins. And so does the Spirit’s fire.
As the Church approaches Pentecost, the Pope recalled that moment when the disciples’ fear was transformed into boldness, and division gave way to unity. The Spirit enabled them to speak in the languages of all peoples — not just linguistically, but spiritually, relationally, humanly.
That same Spirit is still doing this work.
Pentecost is not only a feast; it is a commissioning.
A sending.
A reminder that unity is not wishful thinking — it is a mission entrusted to us.
Just like the new ambassadors we too are invited to begin again. To let the Spirit make us new ambassadors of peace, wherever we live and serve.
Ambassadors who strengthen dialogue.
Ambassadors who deepen understanding.
Ambassadors who refuse to let anyone remain invisible.
Ambassadors who believe unity is possible because God has already begun it.
This Pentecost, may we receive the Spirit not as an idea, but as a calling — a fire that sends us into the world as bearers of hope.
