The Call to Reparation

Contemplating the pierced heart of the Lord, who “took our infirmities and bore our diseases,” inspires me to be more attentive to the sufferings of others.

The encyclical asks us to consider why we, too, should not be ready to give our lives for others. Acts of reparation, such as our love of neighbor and self-denial, are fueled by Christ’s own love. This is a powerful way to own my belovedness—by imitating the one who loved me first and sacrificing for others.

The prophet Isaiah foretold this, writing, “But he was pierced for our transgressions, he was crushed for our iniquities; the punishment that brought us peace was on him, and by his wounds we are healed” (Isaiah 53:5).

What is one small, everyday sacrifice we can make as an act of love and reparation for the suffering of others?

Offer up a small difficulty you face today—like a moment of frustration or a chore you don’t want to do—for someone who is suffering.
