The Heart in the Biblical Tradition

The Bible has a beautiful and rich tradition of speaking about the heart. It’s described not just as a physical organ but as the “hidden core” of who we are—the very place where God sees our true thoughts and intentions.

The story of the disciples on the road to Emmaus captures this perfectly. After encountering the resurrected Jesus, their hearts were “burning within them.” This is a powerful reminder that our hearts have the capacity to recognize and respond to a deeper truth. It’s in those “burning” moments that I feel most alive and most aware of God’s love. It’s in that awareness that I truly own my belovedness.

As “Dilexit Nos”  states, “The Lord, on the other hand, looks at the heart, the hidden core of our person, beneath all outward appearances.” The prophet Ezekiel also speaks of this transformation, promising: “I will give you a new heart and put a new spirit in you; I will remove from you your heart of stone and give you a heart of flesh” (Ezekiel 36:26).

When have you felt your heart “burning” with a deeper truth?

Reread the story of the disciples on the road to Emmaus (Luke 24:13-35). Ask Jesus to reveal himself to you in the same way he revealed himself to them.
