Growing in Relationship

Today is the day I receive my spiritual direction certification. After two intense years of study and growth, I now join the ranks of others who serve in this ministry to walk alongside others to seek and find the voice of God.

God is usually found in the tiny whispers and the mundane activities of our life. We get so used to the loud and chaotic world in which we live that it’s hard to hear God’s whispering voice. Like Elijah when he went to a cave, where he took shelter, we need to be attuned to God’s voice. 

Then the Lord said:  Go out and stand on the mountain before the Lord; the Lord will pass by. There was a strong and violent wind rending the mountains and crushing rocks before the Lord-but the Lord was not in the wind; after the wind, an earthquake-but the Lord was not in the earthquake; after the earthquake, fire-but the Lord was not in the fire; after the fire, a light silent sound. 

1 Kings 11-12

Sometimes it’s hard to hear this tiny whisper of God’s voice, because our lives are loud. Developing a habit of prayer, trying new styles of prayer, or meeting with a Spiritual Director can often give God a chance to be heard.

Lord, show us how to make space in our lives, so that we may listen deeply to Your voice and the many ways you speak, usually in love and kindness.
