The Virtue of Equity

The virtue of equity invites us to see others as God sees them: not as problems to be solved or cases to be judged, but as persons to be loved. Justice is essential, for God is just. Yet justice alone is not the full story of the Gospel. The same God who judges rightly is also rich in mercy, and His mercy never abandons His truth.

In a fallen world, rules and laws are necessary for the common good. But no law can fully account for the complexities of the human heart. The same burden may be light for one person and crushing for another. The same failure may arise from malice in one soul and weakness or suffering in another. Equity recognizes this reality. It honors the law while also attending to the person standing before us.

How often we are tempted to make quick judgments, satisfied that we have the facts and therefore the right to render a verdict. Yet Christ consistently looked deeper. He saw not only actions, but wounds; not only failures, but possibilities for redemption. He never ignored justice, but neither did He separate it from compassion.

To practice equity is to cultivate the patient vision of love. It is to remember that every person is a mystery fashioned by God, carrying burdens we may never fully understand. When we learn to hold truth and mercy together, we begin, however imperfectly, to reflect the heart of the One who is both perfectly just and infinitely merciful.
