The first step of the spiritual life is humility, a concept most of us have difficulty understanding. True humility is seeing the world as it really is and not how we wish it to be. It means coming to understand the true center of the universe, and it is not me.
Humility does not mean that we reject the gifts we’ve been given or the talents and abilities we have. But it does mean that we recognize our gifts are really meant to benefit others, even more than ourselves. God sends us into the world to help others but the mystery of evil calls us to betray this purity of heart.
No slave is greater than his master, nor any messenger greater than the one who sent him.
John 13:16-17
Lord, may the gifts I have been given inspire me to share with others.
