Day 20: The Good In Front of Me

Reflection by Jacquelyne Rocan

Do I thank God for my present situation?

There are times when I wish that my life would be different from what I am currently experiencing.  I long to be married again, have children, and be able to enjoy more time for travel and relaxation rather than working full-time.  I imagine what my life might look like, and I always imagine that it would be better and more fulfilling than my current life.

When I engage in this magical thinking, I have learned to stop myself and take a moment to say a prayer of gratitude for the life that I have, the people that I am blessed to have in my life, and the situations that I have the opportunity to experience.  It is easy to assume that life would be better if my circumstances would be different, but this assumption reflects a lack of trust in God and of His will for my life.  I recall the words from the Prophet Jeremiah:  “For I know well the plans I have in mind for you – oracle of the LORD – plans for your welfare and not for woe, so as to give you a future of hope” (Jeremiah 29:11).

If I keep hoping and wishing for a different life, I will fail to recognize and appreciate all of the good that God has done and continues to do for me.  God knows what is best — I need to simply trust and keep moving forward.

How have I thanked God for my present state in life today?

Thank you, God, for all of the blessings and gifts that You have bestowed on me.  Please increase my trust in Your will for me and keep me ever grateful for my life and the people you place in my life that help me grow in faith, hope, and love.  Authentically Yours.
