How devoted are you to finding meaning and God’s goodness in your life? As Mark Nepo says in the Book of Soul, “It takes effort to stay immersed until wonder reveals itself, and devotion to stay immersed until wonder becomes a way of life.” The word “devote” comes from the Latin meaning “to uphold a vow.” My life has been ever transforming since I became immersed and devoted to God’s goodness.
Forcing a spiritual awareness is mostly a wasted exercise. I only need to stand still and open my eyes and ears. Learning theology doesn’t create a spiritual experience either. I only need to see and hear what surrounds me. I live in a vast and marvelous universe, and it speaks for itself. This universe has always been there, it is I who have been asleep or deaf to its mighty roar. It is a life source that grounds me in meaning. All of creation is the breath of life that I draw into my lungs. It is tangible evidence of God’s love for me. I breathe out my praise and devotion for such a beautiful gift.
Finally, brothers, whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is just, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is gracious, if there is any excellence and if there is anything worthy of praise, think about these things. Keep on doing what you have learned and received and heard and seen in me. Then the God of peace will be with you.
Philippians 4:8-9
Lord, thank you for my breath to praise you as God the Father, Jesus Christ, and the Holy Spirit.
