Winning the Spiritual Battle of Pride with Humility

Last Sunday, we looked at the role sin and vice play in diverting us from living the good life.  We live a good life when we live a virtuous life with God, giving ourselves over to His goodness, and when we understand that we are promised protection from a life of disease and our ultimate enemy, which is sin and death. Grasping this truth changes the way we live and experience God’s love.  We see that we have the divine within us, we are saints, and we are holy.  But it is through our thoughts and actions that we become sinners.  This is the spiritual battle we face each day. With intentionality, effort, and a pure heart, we will prevail!

Winning the Spiritual Battle

Having completed our study on the gifts and the fruits of the Holy Spirit, we will spend the next few weeks on a topic our culture says doesn’t exist – sin.  It is an unpopular word because we subscribe to an “if it feels good, do it” philosophy.  Because we don’t talk openly and often about sin, we are less aware of what it is and how destructive it is to us living our best life.   Sin is death.  Sin keeps us from living in the Spirit, accepting our gifts, and bearing good fruit.

God hates death. He is a God of life and of resurrection.

Right Ordered Desire. Fruit of the Spirit: Chastity

Art by Melanie Boutiette Just Beloved

The fruit of chastity is grossly misunderstood in our society. Perhaps this is because we don’t talk much about its importance.  It seems to me that in our oversexualized world, the conversation about chastity is kept in the dark because it is so countercultural.  After reading this post, I hope you gain a greater appreciation of this fruit and how not being chaste negatively impacts our world, especially women.  Ultimately, I am hopeful that this conversation leads us to re-think and prioritize chastity and right-ordered desire in our lives.

Feeling Safe and Secure.  Fruit of the Spirit: Self Control

Art by Melanie Boutiette Just Beloved

Would you feel safe and secure living in a house without windows and doors?  Proverbs 25:28 tells us that a person without self-control is like a house with its doors and windows knocked out.  Biblical self-control means choosing to give up trying to control things on our own, surrendering to God for help, and working alongside Him for real change.  If you lack self-control, you will be controlled by your whims.  If you do not choose to rely on the Holy Spirit and aim to make the right choices, you cannot become your best self.

A Way of Being.  Fruit of the Spirit: Generosity

Art by Melanie Boutiette Just Beloved

It is often said that the United States of America is a generous nation full of generous people. According to Giving USA, charitable giving totaled $471.44 billion in 2020 up from $448.66 billion in 2019.  According to the report, giving by individuals totaled $324.1 billion, up 2.2%.  This is even in the complex landscape of the COVID pandemic and the racial and social justice movements. We saw cracks in the US infrastructure like never before, showing us glaring needs, and Americans continued to give billions of dollars to charity to help. Having been blessed to have a long, successful career in philanthropy, I have seen many examples of this generosity in action.  It inspires me to see individuals live in the Spirit of generosity, giving so much of themselves to help the good causes in which they believe.
