The Mystery of Grace

“I do not understand the mystery of grace, only that it meets us where we are and does not leave us where it found us.”
— Anne Lamott

There is something deeply consoling about grace.

We often imagine that we must become better before approaching God. We want to have our lives in order, our hearts purified, our faith stronger. Yet grace works in the opposite direction. It meets us exactly where we are: in our weakness, our confusion, our failures, and our need.

God does not wait for us to become worthy of His love. He comes to us in the midst of our imperfections and gently draws us toward Himself.

The mystery is that grace never leaves us unchanged.

Like water slowly wearing away stone, grace quietly shapes the soul. It softens what has become hardened. It heals what has been wounded. It strengthens what has grown weak. Often this transformation is so gradual that we hardly notice it until we look back and see how far God has carried us.

Perhaps that is why grace is a gift rather than an achievement. We cannot earn it. We can only receive it.

And when we do, we discover that God loves us too much to leave us where He found us. He meets us in our brokenness. He accompanies us in our journey. And little by little, He transforms us into the person He created us to be.
