Advent is a season of waiting, but not of uncertainty. We wait anchored in hope—the hope that is not wishful thinking or fragile optimism, but the steady promise of God. Hope is the anchor that holds us fast when the waters of life grow restless, when shadows lengthen and the night feels long.
This hope is not something we earn. It is not the result of our striving or our perfection. It is God’s free gift, given in Christ, who comes to dwell among us. To accept this gift is to open our hands, unclench our hearts, and allow ourselves to be held by the One who is faithful.
Scripture reminds us: “We have this hope as an anchor for the soul, firm and secure” (Hebrews 6:19). Advent invites us to practice this acceptance daily: lighting candles against the dark, whispering prayers that remind us of God’s nearness, and choosing trust over fear. In doing so, we discover that hope is not only a promise for tomorrow—it is a presence today.
As we journey toward Christmas, may we rest in this anchor of hope. May we receive it fully, gratefully, and allow it to steady us, so that our lives themselves become a witness to the gift we have been given.
