How Do You Remember?

Reflections for contemplative living

Recently as I’ve slowed down and am listening to the nudges of my heart, I’ve been drawn towards creativity. This has included getting some new plants for my home and with new zeal I’m trying to keep them alive.

While I was shopping for them, I saw the most beautiful violet. It reminded me of my grandmother who tended and cared for the many violets she had. She would enlist me at times to water them all, despite my brown thumb. Despite my fear of killing this beautiful flower, I bought it and have been caring for it. This violet has brought me such joy just sitting on my coffee table in front of my comfy prayer chair. Not only is it beautiful, it reminds me of my grandmother who touched my life in a special way. The memories I recall each time I see the violet are like a prayer, calling me towards gratitude for this loving, steady, strong, kind woman in my life.

Prayer is one of the most powerful ways we can support others. Joining together in prayer for the living and the dead entrusts us all into God’s care. This Spiritual Work of Mercy, long part of the Christian tradition, guide us to help “our neighbor in their spiritual needs.”

What a gift this simple violet is that calls me to prayer throughout the day for someone special who has passed on into eternal life.

How will you pray for the dead in your life today?

Thank you, Lord, for the gifts that help us remember and draw us closer to you.
