We are called to walk the right road in life, one of truth and virtue. Patience is an important virtue in our journey as it helps us not give into our impulses and resist temptation. Whether it be in thoughts, emotions or actions, my faith helps me take a modest approach to life.
Have you ever thought about how you dress can inspire patience? When I think about the messages I send to my body, what I dress myself in can send strong messages both to myself and to others.
Dressing for modesty does not mean looking like a geek or being out of fashion. Modest dressing means not calling attention to my body. Clothes should help reflect who I am as a person, not put a spotlight on my flesh or sexuality. How I dress as a person can make the difference between being respected or being treated like a piece of meat. Henri Frederic Amiel said, “Modesty is always the sign and safeguard of a mystery. It is explained by its contrary– profanation.” Practicing patience and modesty actually feeds the flames of mystery and desire, respecting the body and person as what it is – a gift of God. We dive into this beautiful mystery when we live in this space according to our vocation.
Modesty protects the mystery of persons and their love. It encourages patience and moderation in loving relationships; it requires that the conditions for the definitive giving and commitment of man and woman to one another be fulfilled.
