Real Spiritual Freedom

Reflections for contemplative living

We are told not to fear those who kill the body but cannot kill the soul. Through the power of God’s being, He has linked us to the creative source of all existence. Within that place we are safe—even from those who would kill the body.

Many Names, Same God

Reflections for contemplative living

My husband and I recently visited family and friends on the Atlantic in Florida. His cousins have a beautiful place on the beach, a place that restores me. In addition to experiencing God’s beautiful creation, it’s a restorative time for my husband and his cousin who reminisced about the family. The ocean with its power and beauty grounds me into God’s presence. It’s a tangible way for me to “Be still and know God.”

After a beautiful walk on the beach one day, we cooled off for a while in the pool. We met some neighbors who were heading home east for a few months after being here for the winter. We began talking about life: our families, kids and grandchildren, work and health issues.

My cousin Nina shared how she finds these words I write encouraging and the gentleman talked about how 20 years ago he had a similar one called “thoughts to ponder.” He went deeper and shared a poem he wrote about his life and living as he was meant to live, without the facades. It was beautiful and touched us deeply.

At that moment we were aligned in solidarity with the goodness in the world. Despite the fact that he called God “Higher Power” and we call God-God we all knew ultimate goodness.

God has many names.

It’s beautiful how simple words of encouragement can break open the bread of a deep and delicious conversation.

Thank you Lord for a beautiful poolside exchange that warmed my heart for the day, fed and restored my soul

This is a life of awareness, growth, and maturity.  But it’s a fine line as our progress is only a result of God’s grace. Our role is to walk the narrow path of humility, aligning my will with God’s and giving my all.

Calm Within The Storm

Reflections for contemplative living

Throughout scripture, we find stories about Jesus calming the storms at sea.  Through this lens, we witness some of the spiritual dynamics of fear and trust. The disciples stand symbolically for all of us journeying through life within the narrow confines of our fearful ego.

Striving For Holiness

Reflections for contemplative living

We have many people we can look up to as role models to show us how to live a good life.  Each of us is unique, with a specific purpose but we need teachers to help us grow along the way.  People who help us broaden our perspective, help us think a little differently or challenge us to a deeper layer of awareness. Spiritually, others help us uncover another layer of who we are in God.  These gifts help us get outside ourselves, cooperate with grace, and claim the peace we are promised.
