One of the easiest traps to fall into is measuring our lives against someone else’s.
Their success. Their influence. Their family. Their opportunities. Their accomplishments. In a world where we’re constantly exposed to carefully curated snapshots of other people’s lives, comparison can become second nature. Before long, those whispers in our ears have us evaluating our own story through the lens of someone else’s highlight reel.
I’ve come to believe that’s exactly where the enemy wants us.
Because comparison steals joy. It creates dissatisfaction with gifts God intentionally gave us. It shifts our focus from God’s calling on our lives to God’s work in someone else’s. And ultimately, it convinces us that we are falling behind when we may be exactly where God wants us to be.
God offers a different invitation.
Instead of comparing ourselves to others, He invites us to look backward and ask a simpler question:
Am I becoming more like Christ than I was yesterday?
Not last place versus first place.
Not my journey versus yours.
Just faithfulness and growth.
When I look at my life that way, the metrics change. The questions become less about achievement and more about transformation.
Am I more patient than I used to be?
Do I trust God more deeply than I did a year ago?
Am I quicker to extend grace?
Am I surrendering more of my life to Him?
Those aren’t the kinds of things that attract attention online, but they’re exactly the things God is cultivating in us.
The beautiful thing about this perspective is that it frees us from competition. Someone else’s success no longer threatens us because their story isn’t the standard. The standard is growth. Progress. Faithfulness.
Who I am becoming matters more than how I compare.
God is not asking me to be the most gifted person in the room. He’s not asking me to live someone else’s life. He’s asking me to take the person I was yesterday and, by His grace, become a little more like Jesus today.
That is a comparison worth making.
And when I look at life through that lens, I find far more gratitude than envy, far more peace than striving, and far more confidence in the God who is steadily shaping me day by day.
