Being Loved

The Gift of Spiritual Companionship

“If you do not have someone to guide you, to hold onto you during the times of not knowing, you will normally stay at your present level of growth.” —Father Richard Rohr

Contemplative prayer is not a skill to master but a posture to inhabit—a lifelong unfolding, never perfected yet always enough. It takes many forms: silent meditation, sacred chanting, Centering Prayer, and sometimes, the quiet presence of another soul walking beside us.

Spiritual companionship is itself a contemplative practice. Through deep listening and gentle presence, a spiritual director or companion helps us attune to the voice of God within and around us. They do not instruct or correct, but invite us to notice, to remember, to trust. In their presence, we are not judged or preached to—we are held.

In seasons of uncertainty, when the path narrows or disappears altogether, a sacred companion can reflect back to us the truth we’ve forgotten: that God is still here. That we are still becoming. That the journey is not ours to control, but to surrender to.

As Father Richard reminds us, “Spirit can’t let you get away with that.” The spiritual director holds onto Spirit when we cannot. They help us loosen our grip, expand our vision, and discover meaning beyond our small self.

Spiritual direction is not a detour—it is the path itself. A quiet, grace-filled way of growing into the person God already sees. Feel free to reach out if you are curious about Spiritual Companionship. 🙏🏻
