Do you possess the fire of love and compassion in your heart and soul? Today is Pentecost Sunday in the Catholic Church. This is the 50th day after Easter and a significant feast commemorating the descent of the Holy Spirit upon the Apostles, signifying the birth of the Church and the empowerment of believers to share the Gospel.
We wear red because it is the color of the Holy Spirit, reminding us of the tongues of fire that descended on the disciples. I like to think of the Holy Spirit as the fire of divine love.
This week as I’ve contemplated the power of the Holy Spirit and prepared my heart to celebrate this magnificent mystery I couldn’t help but turn to music to help draw me deeper into my meditations. I immediately thought of Billy Joel’s song “We Didn’t Start the Fire.”
I did some investigation and learned he wrote the song after having a conversation with someone who felt the world was unfixable.
In essence, “We Didn’t Start the Fire” is a song about perspective, history, and the interconnectedness of generations. It’s a way of saying that while we may face challenges, we’re not alone and that the world has always been in flux. Our problems are a continuation of historical events and that the “fire” of turmoil and conflict has been burning for a long time, and we’re just part of it. He chants the following lyrics:
“We didn’t start the fire
It was always burning, since the world’s been turning
We didn’t start the fire
No, we didn’t light it, but we tried to fight it”
The Holy Spirit has been breathing life in the chaos of the world since the beginning of creation giving proper order to our disordered world. Let’s pray for the fire 🔥 of the Holy Spirit to enflame our hearts and the hearts of all creation. Let’s fight the disorder with God’s mercy, love and compassion rather than pick up the weapons of unforgiveness, judgment, hatred and violence. Let’s dispose our hearts to the all consuming flames of God’s love so we can go out and burn up the world with our love.
Come Holy Spirt Come🙏🙏🙏
