Do you spiritually strive to live as a witness to a hope that never disappoints and as missionary of a life that conquers death? A death of destructive thoughts and resentment? Do you want to cultivate a spirit of generosity and patience in difficulty and the ability to forgive those who offend you? These are big Holy goals and we need divine assistance and help from others to support our journey. St. Rita of Casia who we celebrate today in the church can assist.
I learned about Rita on a pilgrimage in 2017. There was something about her story that stuck with me. Born a peasant in Roccaporena, Italy, Rita desired to remain a virgin from her youth, but her parents chose marriage for her. Fourteen years later, Rita’s husband was murdered. Her prayers were answered when her two sons died rather than avenge the crime. Such a tragic story and how the fierce love of a mother showered protection over her children.
Rita later joined the Augustinians at Cascia, where for forty years she cultivated a devotion to Christ crucified. Her emblem in art is the rose that miraculously bloomed in the winter of her death. It is a beautiful convent located high in the mountains. Present day nuns continue her work or prayer and service today.
We can all use a little help from our friends. You might add St Rita to your tribe.
Prayer to Saint Rita of Cascia
O Holy Saint Rita, we ask You to assist us in our trials and difficulties, and help us to be generous in serving the needs of others, to be patient in all difficulties, to be forgiving toward
all who injure us.
Amen.
