Being Loved

A Protective Shield

Today is the annual commemoration of blessed Dymphna, who is an example for us of chastity and fortitude during distressing times. We see through her life how God’s protection was her shield and shelter, rescuing her from the plaque of the life she in which she found herself.

I’m reminded of the times when my children were little I would have them envision being in a protective bubble where others harmful words or actions could hurt their heart. a protective shield I hope they carry with them today.

It is fitting we honor St. Dymphna during May which is mental heath month in the United States. Our thought life matters as these seeds nourish our souls. Our fall as humans began with the seed of doubt in God’s goodness separating us from our belovedness. Let’s ask St. Dymphna, patron saint of those suffering mental illness, to pray for us and those who struggle with disordered thoughts and rescue from the “fowler’s snare:”

Good St. Dymphna, great wonder-worker in every affliction of mind and body, I humbly implore your powerful intercession with Jesus through Mary, the Health of the Sick, in my present need. (Mention it.) St. Dymphna, martyr of purity, patroness of those who suffer with nervous and mental afflictions, beloved child of Jesus and Mary, pray to Them for me and obtain my request.

For reflection

“He will rescue you from the fowler’s snare, from the destroying plague, He will shelter you with his pinions, and under his wings you may take refuge; his faithfulness is a protecting shield.”—Psalm 91:3-4
