Fidelity to the Lord is measured not in the number or supposed grandeur of our deeds but in the conformity of our will to his. The grace of Mary is the grace to be bearer and handmaid of the Lord unto the end—and not according to a limited service contract of our own bargaining.
The “Word of God became flesh and made his dwelling” in her who loved and lived that word. She offered herself so that Christ might offer himself in the body he received from her. Through her maternity, we too “have been consecrated,” made worthy to “see his glory” for all eternity.
Mary did not understand all that was being asked of her, and she pondered over many things as they unfolded around her.
Her ‘yes’ to God’s message was a blanket acceptance in faith of whatever would come in her life. Our own faith and trust in God has to be like that. We will never in this life come to understand the reason for all that happens to us. Our ‘yes’ to God is a commitment of mind and heart to God. Let us pray to renew our own commitment and to live it.
On this Solemnity of the Annunciation of the Lord take some time to ponder where the Lord is asking for your “yes” and vow to give generously.
