The mind is a terrible thing to waste. I remember the days of PSAs, with the egg-searing in a hot pan helping us visualize our brains on drugs being particularly memorable. I agree with this message when it comes to drugs and alcohol and the devastating effects they have on the development of our brains. But not so much on the spiritual journey.
Mindset is a huge part of shaping our perspective which becomes our reality. And one of the benefits of a contemplative practice is the ability to train our minds to be neutral, to do nothing, to observe, and just be. Our minds learn how to waste time.
This is a key message of Jesus when he calls us to repent. This is about changing our direction and shifting our worldly thinking to an eternal one. It’s backwards thinking but critical for us to practice in order to surrender our will and soften our hearts in humility. To live in faith and not fear, where our thoughts and actions come from a peaceful heart.
Thank you, Lord, for helping me waste time towards a more peaceful heart.
