God Is Love

Reflections for contemplative living

God is love. 1 John 4:7-8

No one knows the father like the Son, because he emerged from the bosom of the Trinitarian mystery that John says is love. Notice that John doesn’t say God shows love but rather states that “God is love”. This is a huge distinction.

The love of God is God. That means it’s not sentimental. It’s incredibly powerful and ruthlessly determined. It’s determined to give itself away at any cost. And the problem we all have with God as He really is, is that He invites us to do the same. If it’s not in this life, on your deathbed, you will finally have to say goodbye to the false self because you can’t take it with you.

Beloved, let us love one another, because love is from God; everyone who loves is born of God and knows God. Whoever does not love does not know God, for God is love. God’s love was revealed among us in this way:  God sent his only Son into the world so that we might live through him.

1 Johan 4:7-9
