Two Our Fathers and a Hail Mary

Reflections for contemplative living

The other day I was in the dentist’s office, getting my teeth cleaned, and a new electric toothbrush caught my eye. Not only was it guaranteed to get your teeth cleaned, it had a two minute timer that would ensure one brushed their teeth the appropriate amount of time.

It’s easy for me to get caught up in the latest and greatest that the comforts of life provides. But I have to take a step back and realize the consumerism culture in which I live and truly discern what it is that I need.

Although I did not get the fancy new toothbrush, this experience did provide me with an awareness and an invitation.  One to slow down and ensure I am taking the needed time to brush my teeth. As I timed my usual routine, I was shocked. I was in fact, deceiving myself thinking I was brushing my teeth for two minutes, but in reality I was not.

I’m taking a different approach.  The appropriate amount of time allows me to pray two Our Fathers and a Hail Mary.  In essence, I kill two birds with one stone, spending more time in prayer and making sure my teeth are being cared for.

Thank you, Lord, for speaking to me in every circumstance of my life to help realize it’s the simple things.
