Reflections for contemplative living

We are sent by God, the father of mercy, to distribute this treasure to those in need. The works of mercy are charitable actions by which we come to the aid of our neighbor in his spiritual and bodily necessities. Instructing, advising, consoling, and comforting are spiritual works of mercy, as are forgiving and bearing wrongs patiently. St. Thomas Aquinas defined mercy as “the compassion in our hearts for another person’s misery, a compassion which drives us to do what we can to help him.”  Are you a missionary of mercy?

When we courageously undertake great tasks for God’s glory, we will have the power and grace to succeed. We must keep faith that we can do all things in Him. Help will never fail us if we have confidence in God’s goodness.

Do you place your entire physical and spiritual welfare in His hands? Do you abandon to the fatherly concern of His divine providence every care for your health, reputation, property, and business; for those near to you; for your past sins; for your soul’s progress in virtue and love of him; for your life, death, and especially your salvation and eternity—in a word, all your cares?

Lord, thank you for drawing me to rest in the assurance of Your pure goodness, while You watch with tenderness over all my responsibilities and cares, arranging all things for the greatest good.
