We live in a pretty disordered world. One just has to look at the news, popular entertainment, and trends on social media to catch a glimpse. We live in the sensational, not the reality of the present. It’s not a wonder we are disordered people unless we constantly turn to God for wisdom and strength to know what is good. Our unconscious behaviors wreak havoc on those around us and it’s our responsibility to mature and grow in awareness, compassion, and forgiveness.
In bringing God’s order to the world, Jesus had to move into the arena of disorder, but this invasion was not met with passivity. The principalities of the world—Herod, Pilate, the scribes and Pharisees, the demons—waged a ferocious struggle against Him, and it was only through the drama of the cross and Resurrection that Jesus managed to defeat them.
He took all of their violence and, through courageous forgiveness, robbed it of its authority, for violence feeds on itself, surviving only through reproduction. When violence is met with compassion and forgiveness, it dissipates, its power source gone.
Is there a hurtful act against you that needs your courageous forgiveness?
Lord, thank you for the gift of Your forgiveness so I can pass that along to others.
