Too Much of a Good Thing

Reflections for contemplative living

Lately I’ve been doing a little shadow boxing and gaining awareness of some of the parts of who I am that I’ve tucked in the shadows of my personality.  I’m realizing that sometimes I care too much about others and about doing a good job. This is a good thing until it is not.

Like Mother Mary, we are to watch over our hearts. She watched over her every word and lived a penitent life despite her purity.  We, on the contrary, are surrounded by flattering, treacherous enemies whose sole aim is to use our natural weaknesses to bring about our fall. Yet we have no fear and are not watchful at all. We expose ourselves to temptations that would bring down even the strongest soul. Caring and putting all your effort into something is a good thing as long as you don’t sacrifice your heart to love God, neighbor, and self.

How well do you focus on self-care?

Thank you, Lord, for leading me in a temperate life, showing me when I need to rest and when I need to act, not getting caught up in “too much.”
