Today is Pentecost, one of my favorite celebrations in the Church. This is the Paschal Mystery brought to completion, where by the power of the Holy Spirit we are united with God’s Only Begotten Son. This is the same Spirit, as the Church came to birth, opened all peoples to the knowledge of God and brought together the many languages of the earth in the profession of the one faith. It’s pretty cool to think that for those of us who believe, we have this fire of divine love within.
It is easy to get distracted from this hopeful stance as we look at the state of our world. There is pain and suffering. Evil is a true force always trying to divide, conquer, and win. We all have the capacity for good and evil within us – what will you choose today? We are given the gift of the Spirit that lives within our heart. Will I surrender my plan and agenda, cultivate a listening ear and have the desire to let good prevail?
Come, Holy Spirit, fill the hearts of the faithful and kindle in them the fire of your love.
Lord, send out your Spirit, and renew the face of the earth.
