As I face a milestone birthday, I’m so grateful for my health and for being physically, emotionally, and spiritually in a good place, but I stand in the tension of accepting the reality of my human condition.

Busyness in our lives can keep us believing that we are in control, that we are managing just fine, living in a false reality. And no doubt there are some things we are handling. Meals are cooked. Laundry is done. We haven’t missed much work. We’re on top of our finances. But we aren’t peaceful. What’s wrong?

The greatest sources of our suffering are in the lies we tell ourselves. It can be excruciating to face reality. Most human suffering is related to love and loss, when we feel those real, raw emotions that just crack us open. To live life, we must acknowledge, experience, and bear the reality of life with all its pleasures and heartbreak. We need to know what we know and feel what we feel. 

How many times do I live sliding between the peace of my new awareness and the pull of my old habits of what’s comfortable and familiar. Living in independence instead of dependence on my Creator. As I feel the tension, I need to remember the Holy Spirit is rooting for me.

When I pray the Lord’s Prayer, and say words “… thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven …”, I am showing my trust in God that He knows what is best for each of us in every situation as He alone sees the “big picture”, He alone knows what is right for all people and all situations.

Hope can arouse us like nothing else to live in the space of possibility. To sustain us on our life journey, God gives us the seeds of faith, hope, and love. Hope inspires and drives us to move mountains. Hope helps us broaden our perspective and see the possibilities in our life.

How often do you find yourself rushing around the day with no space to think or even go to the bathroom? Or filling your schedule so tight with activities there is little time to enjoy what is in front of you? We have created a culture of hurry where we pack more things in a day than is humanly possible. But we are human, we are not machines. We need the space to just be and not always be doing. This is where we become our best selves. It takes effort to slow down but it is worth it.

A warrior is a person engaged or experienced in warfare, a soldier, one who shows or has shown great vigor, courage, or aggressiveness. I rarely think of Jesus this way but lately the living word has been helping me see this persona. Jesus as Warrior shows us how to sacrifice himself for the good of others. And to take care of the elderly, the defenseless, those who cannot provide for themselves, and above all, the children – the future of humanity.

Do you place limits on God’s love? I often think about how limited my human perspective is as I try to know God. It is only through the humility of a humble heart, which listens to the Spirit dwelling within me, that I expand my understanding of the greatness of God. This experience allows me to live the mystery.

Humility can be an elusive gift because we see it as being weak or meek. But once we understand and dare to open this gift, we can see its beauty.
