Slowing Down

Reflections for contemplative living

How often do you find yourself rushing around the day with no space to think or even go to the bathroom? Or filling your schedule so tight with activities there is little time to enjoy what is in front of you? We have created a culture of hurry where we pack more things in a day than is humanly possible. But we are human, we are not machines. We need the space to just be and not always be doing. This is where we become our best selves. It takes effort to slow down but it is worth it.

I can slow down and be intentional in the everyday things:

  • Rather than inhaling my food, I’m chewing intentionally and enjoying the rich flavors.
  • Instead of mindlessly drinking, I’m enjoying the company in front of me and the beautiful wine.
  • Rather than scrolling through reflections and readings about someone else’s experiences, I’m prioritizing my prayer, scripture meditation and tapping into my own experiences.
  • I can plan my meals and exercising goals rather than winging it and not reaping the benefits.
  • When I stop and ask myself, is it the best decision to veg out on Nexflix before bed or is it the better choice to take a walk with my husband and connect with him first?

Lord, thank you for giving me the courage to slow down and become who You want me to be.
